silverton school

The yoga the light
A math teacher I needed
out of time and place
Overview:
The small town of Silverton, Colorado, boasts a warm, welcoming, close-knit school community, housed within a recently remodeled historic, three-story building. Upon entering the school, one is struck by the enveloping sense of a truly harmonious environment. Blended classrooms, with less than twenty students each, feature student-centered arrangements with classroom culture and ‘mantras for success’ explicitly displayed on posters in each room. Academics at Silverton School are based on an Expeditionary Learning model and include an emphasis on technology, which allows students to access CO digital learning systems, for higher learning math concepts. In addition to technology, the school takes full advantage of its local setting and resources, including Fort Lewis College, in order to get kids out of the classroom and into the real world of learning for “field work.” Students participate in at least one BIG Expedition each year, and if you ask students or faculty, these trips are an invaluable experience for both. These expeditions foster individual growth and contribute to strong community building. Expeditions are made possible in part thanks to community fundraising, which makes such trips possible for all students. Upon entering any classroom, it is clear that maintaining an inclusive environment is ‘paramount’ and very-much intentional. This unique building in this unique community exhibits a very unique school culture that has become the standard that some of us aspire to find in our future endeavors.
