Overview:
Mountain Middle School is located on the site of the old Mason School, built in 1878, and across the street from the original Animas City School, built in 1904. Its historic location, however, does not prevent the school from being a beacon of modernity. Influenced by the High Tech High model of project-based learning, this public charter school provides students with access to technology within an interdisciplinary curriculum. Students have access to 3-D printers, laser cutters, and benefit from a one-to-one ratio for laptops. The school boasts a Net Zero carbon footprint in addition to a student-based health center. The culture of Mountain revolves around The Four Habits of Heart and Mind, which include respect, effort, integrity, and refinement. Such refinement is exhibited by the student work that has been curated for display at the school and elsewhere in the community. Students demonstrate learning by regularly participating in Exhibitions, which are open to the public. Self- reflection is also a central element of learning at MMS, and students create presentations of learning (POLs) twice a year to reflect on their personal growth and goals. Mountain Middle School provides a unique learning experience for each and every student and is living up to its mission of creating "a safe and supportive culture, [that] integrates technology and project-based learning into a rigorous curriculum that prepares students to achieve their highest academic and social potential."

Plans for the current school. The original school house in Durango, Colorado.
Project based learning: where students are encouraged to express themselves and challenge themselves academically in a self-directed manner.
