Big picture high school

Calagias’s
room dark, intense—a place like
an Academy
Overview:
The philosophy here is “One student at a time”. Core classes are emphasized and students work on projects to fulfill certain academic standards. They also are required to complete two 12 week internships to experience careers. Students have the ability to create classes as they see fit. The students are the heart and center at this school. Everything that is done here is intended to benefit the students over anything else. The school is situated in the old Durango High School building right down town. The classrooms are large and allow the students to spread out and work on their projects. The students who go to this school love it. It “pokes the bear” in each student and forces them to get out there and do something big. Students mainly work on projects during the time we visited. The advisor assisted them as they worked on what interests them personally. Teachers are referred to as advisors and assist students in many aspects of their lives. Advisors at big picture are a rock in the lives of the students there and help them as problems arise.
